A Country Diary: Welcome, Spring

9.40am, Sunday 1st March
It is a cold and windy day, but the sun is shining and the birds are singing.
Springtime. The best season, my favourite season. The time of promise, new life, warmth and of course, happiness.
As the end of February is just behind us, the snowdrops are in full bloom and mother nature is beginning the dance of new life once more. Alongside their delicate white flowers peek the first shoots of the early daffodil, breaking through the cold ground, a powerful attempt at encouraging spring along it's way. Tulips, Iris and Allium are not far behind, the small but gallant shoots stand proud no matter the weather.
With frost on the ground and a chill in the air, our windowsills are suddenly adorned with milk jugs brimming with golden daffodils, our outright defiance against the icy weather beyond the window. It is time for spring, we utter as the forecast mentions more possible snowfall.
It is time for daffodils, for Easter, for sparkly new life everywhere we look. Time to feel the sun on our faces, to hide away the scarves and gloves, replacing them with light jackets and shorter sleeves.
It is time to sip coffee in the garden, on a bright and beautiful March morning, contemplating the work to be done outside before summer arrives. The hope and excitement that is felt in this moment cannot be beaten; watching shoots peak through the soil, buds forming on trees and realising the ambitions of our country garden once more. The work to be done will be hard, yes, but oh so rewarding when June rolls around and we kick off our shoes, just to walk barefoot on the soft green lawn.
The birds have already begun singing for spring, their gentle chirruping greatly appreciated each morning. A wonderful sound to awake to, telling of the beautiful day, and the beautiful season that lies just beyond the curtains...
