Tales from the Potting Bench | Making a Pea Tepee
So I decided this year I'm going to grow my own. I've got a specific area mapped out to be a pea and sweet pea raised bed, but it needs a lot of prep work and I haven't had a moment to do that yet.
Seeing as I don't want to wait until the end of summer to get my crops, I've started some peas off in a large pot, to try and achieve early yields that will be followed by the batch in the raised bed, when I finally get time to prep it.
So I've made a 'tepea' for support when the seedlings arrive, and am getting somewhat excited! I don't know if growing peas in a pot is wise, or even successful, but I'm going to stick with it and hope it gets me somewhere. (Preferably in my summer garden eating freshly shelled peas!)
I started by filling a large pot with multi-purpose compost with a little fish, blood and bone food mixed in.
I then made a trench and planted the peas about 2 inches apart, in a circle.
I covered this over with more compost and popped a few peas in the centre for good measure. I watered it well and began to build my structure.
To construct the tepee, I poked 4 bamboo canes into the pot and tied them together at the top. I then used garden ties to fix a length of pea netting to the whole structure, making sure every part of it was covered, in order to give the seedlings a good chance.
And voilà! Not the prettiest of garden accessories but hopefully it will work. I guess as long as it keeps warm enough it should fare pretty well. I hope. It's a total experiment but hopefully I can share it's progress with you in a few weeks' time.
